Consistently ranked among the top 10 countries to live in by the United Nations and the Economist Intelligence Unit, Canada offers a safe, welcoming environment with high living standards and globally recognised qualifications.
Beyond academics, Canada provides excellent immigration pathways, especially through its Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) program, which enables international graduates to gain valuable Canadian work experience — a key advantage for long-term career growth.

Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) in Canada
The PGWP allows eligible graduates from Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs) to work in Canada after completing their studies. Work experience gained through PGWP can support various skilled immigration pathways in the future.
PGWP Validity & Duration
The length of a PGWP depends on:
- The duration of the study program
- The level of the credential
- The validity of the student’s passport
Master’s Degree Programs (Updated: February 15, 2024)
- Eligible students can receive a 3-year PGWP, even if the program was less than 2 years.
- The program must be at least 8 months or (900 hours in Quebec).
Applies to master’s degrees only - not to certificates or diplomas.
Other Eligible Programs
- 8 months to < 2 years: PGWP is issued for the same length as the program (Example: 9-month program → 9-month PGWP)
- 2 years or longer: PGWP valid for 3 years
- Multiple eligible programs: Students may combine programs (each at least 8 months) for a longer PGWP
Passport Validity Requirement
A PGWP cannot exceed the passport expiry date.
If the passport expires sooner, students may apply for a PGWP extension after renewing their passport.
PGWP Eligibility Requirements
In addition to completing a qualifying program at a PGWP-eligible institution, students must meet any updated field-of-study requirements.
You do not need to meet the new field-of-study requirements if:
- You submitted your PGWP application before November 1, 2024
- You graduated from a PGWP-eligible flight school
- You graduated with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree
- You applied for a Canadian study permit before November 1, 2024
Eligible Fields of Study (CIP Codes)
The Canadian government maintains an official list of eligible CIP codes for PGWP.
Students should always verify the most updated list on the official government website.
Who Is Not Eligible for a PGWP?
Students cannot receive a PGWP if they:
- Previously received a PGWP
- Studied English or French as a second language
- Took general interest or self-improvement courses
- Received Global Affairs Canada (GAC) funding requiring them to return to their home country
- Completed more than 50% of their program online (exceptions applied only during COVID-19)
