Work While Studying (F-1 Students)

Employment Options for International Students

1. Curricular Practical Training (CPT)

CPT allows F-1 students to work in positions directly related to their field of study.

• Can be part-time or full-time
• Requires authorization from the Designated School Official (DSO)
• A signed training agreement or employer letter is required
• 12+ months of full-time CPT removes eligibility for OPT (Part-time CPT does not affect OPT)

2. Optional Practical Training (OPT)

• Eligible for 12 months of OPT per academic level
• Requires DSO recommendation and Form I-765 application
• Work begins only after the EAD (work card) is approved
• During academic sessions, students may work up to 20 hours/week

3. STEM OPT Extension (24 Months)

Eligibility requires:

• Employment with an E-Verify registered employer
• Submission of Form I-983 (Training Plan)
• Filing Form I-765 for STEM OPT approval
• Students may continue working up to 180 days while extension is pending
