Sport Journalism MA (PGCert PGDip)
Our accredited Sport Journalism MA will prepare you for an exciting, fast-paced and dynamic career in the sport media industry, equipping you with the multi-platform and multimedia skills needed to be highly employable.
The course will suit you if you have studied an undergraduate degree in a non-journalism subject area or are looking to gain a professional qualification to pursue a career in the industry.
National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ) accreditation is recognised in the industry a strong indication that new recruits have the skills and knowledge to become effective multimedia journalists in a busy newsroom. In addition to your masters degree, you will also have the opportunity to take the NCTJ Diploma in Journalism. The NCTJ diploma is a widely recognised entry-level qualification for professional practice.
The course is flexible in that it allows you to exit with a postgraduate certificate at the end of one semester (three 20-credit modules) or a postgraduate diploma at the end of two semesters (six 20-credit modules). You must complete the 60-credit research project to qualify for the MA.

Two miles north of Brighton city centre and the seafront, Moulsecoomb is the largest of our four campuses with more than 8,000 students. Moulsecoomb Place is home to more than 160 students, while others live in nearby Varley Park. There are a number of areas of Brighton that are popular with students, just a short walk, cycle or bus ride away. These include Moulsecoomb, Bevendean, Hollingbury, Elm Grove, Hanover and other suburbs that stretch up the hills on either side of the Lewes Road.

PSW Opportunity
- 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
- 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
Entry requirements for the MPhil (available as a standalone degree in some schools) are:
a first or second class honours degree, or other qualification which is regarded by the University of Brighton as being equivalent, and which is normally relevant to the programme of study
appropriate experience in a professional or research environment. An application based on professional experience will be considered on its own merits and will normally require independent academic references.
For applicants whose first language is not English, the minimum standard of English competence accepted is normally equivalent to the following International English Language Testing System (IELTS) scores:
Normally we require an overall score of 6.5 with 6.5 in reading and writing, 6.0 in listening and speaking. There are exceptions to this and they are as follows:
research degrees in Arts and Humanities and Health Professions require 7.0 overall, 7 for writing, and none below 6.5.
research degrees in Brighton Business School and the School of Sport and Service Management: 7.0 overall, 7 for writing, and none below 6.0.
research degrees in Engineering, and Environment and Technology require a minimum of 6.0 in each component
All SELT (Secure English language tests) must have been obtained within the preceding two years of the course start date.
Important information regarding changes to the approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) list:
The University of Brighton will continue to accept non-SELT tests such as ‘IELTS Academic’ and ‘Pearson Test of English Academic’, as long as your test results meet the course requirements.
