Criminology with Psychology BSc (Hons)

What is crime? Who gets to decide? How do we react to crime? Why do people offend? What should we do with criminals? Why do we focus on crimes of the powerless? Are crimes of the powerful more harmful? What is the role of the police and the Criminal Justice System? How does the news and media shape our understanding and experience of crime? How do race, gender, age, sexual orientation and class shape experiences of crime and victimisation? How does our more globalised world shape localised experiences of crime? If you have an enquiring mind and an interest in answering some of these questions, a criminology degree at Teesside will explore these issues and more.

In addition, studying psychology gives you a deeper understanding of behaviour and how it is influenced. Psychology’s applications are found everywhere, from half-time team talks to the lighting, music and layout of supermarkets and shopping centres. This criminology with psychology major minor programme provides you with the opportunity to explore criminological issues alongside a psychological focus. The degree links criminological and sociological approaches to crime and justice to more psychologically focused perspectives on these issues. You gain research and study skills from both discipline areas and have the opportunity to explore other aspects of psychology with option choice. You graduate with a thorough grounding in theoretical criminology with psychology, as well as specialist knowledge gained in your module choices, which can be as diverse as drugs and domestic violence.

Careers fair

The annual careers fair, gives you the opportunity to speak to potential employers and find out what careers, jobs, placement and study opportunities are on offer.

Placements, internships and work experience

Increasing student numbers at university makes entry in to the graduate job market very competitive. Research surveys, including those undertaken by High Flyers, highlight the large number of applications for graduate roles (sometimes as high as 70-80 applications for roles on popular graduate training schemes with the big national and international organisations).

Just having a good degree is not enough to give you the best platform to compete for graduate roles - which means work experience, work placements or volunteering is absolutely essential. Employers will be expecting you to have gained experience, articulate what you have gained, including skills you have developed that will be needed in their business.

The Work Experience team within Student Futures is here to help. Get in touch with your School Work Experience Officer (based in the Student Futures team) as early as possible in your studies but especially by the autumn of year two in your studies.
