Our Photography BA will develop your visual and intellectual engagement with photography as well as your technical skills.
The extended degree programmes include a foundation year, which will provide you with a sound introduction to key elements needed for studying Photography at degree level. Our extended degree programme will provide you with a thorough and supportive academic preparation for study. The foundation year is carefully designed to build confidence in your abilities, develop essential academic and study skills, and provide you with the subject specific knowledge essential for success.
You'll develop a range of key photographic skills including the use of 35mm film cameras, film processing, DSLR cameras, medium and large format cameras as well as studio and location lighting. You'll become familiar with the use of relevant software packages including Photoshop and Capture One, as well as digital darkroom skills such as scanning and printing. On campus you'll have access to two industry standard studios, a darkroom and two Mac suites that will facilitate your work.
You'll gain an in depth understanding of contemporary and historical photographic practices and their diverse uses in various cultural fields such as journalism, fine art, fashion, editorial, advertising, and web design. You'll also explore the relationship between photography and cognate disciplines such as cultural studies, anthropology and philosophy.
The course will familiarise you with the work of key theorists and practitioners involved in the ongoing development of the field such as Roland Barthes, and Broomberg and Chanarin, and you'll acquire a range of practical skills, such as project management, presentation skills, and problem identification and solving.
