Our BSc (Hons) Gemmology and Jewellery Studies degree are one of the only courses of its kind in the world. This gemmology course will enable you to gain the highest level of professionally-recognised gemological skills.

Based in the heart of Birmingham’s thriving Jewellery Quarter, you’ll benefit from unrivaled expertise and facilities as you explore precious gems and all relevant aspects of the jewelry trade.

What's covered in the course?

Our highly practical Gemmology and Jewellery Studies degree offers an introduction to geological theory and testing, diamond grading and jewelry valuation.

With our fully-equipped gem labs at your disposal, you’ll be able to carry out a range of standard and advanced gemological tests used in the identification of gemstones.

You’ll have the chance to put gem materials under the microscope, from natural and synthetic gemstones through to imitation. There will also be a chance to learn complementary skills such as photography.

You’ll study at our brand new purpose-built facilities at the Assay Office, just a few minutes’ walks from the School of Jewellery and in the heart of Birmingham’s famous Jewellery Quarter, where much of today’s jewelry is still made. Our staff team are all experts in their field and have extensive industry experience. Our graduates go on to work in a wide variety of roles in the jewelry industry throughout the world.

PSW Opportunity

  • 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
  • 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

Undergraduate courses

The majority of our programmes require the Indian Certificate of Secondary Education (Standard XII) - minimum average of 55% depending on exam board, however some courses may require a higher grade.

Faculty of Art, Design and Media:

Most undergraduate courses in the Art and Design schools require a good portfolio of artwork.
Requires the 12th Standard average of 60% overall.  Some courses require Maths with a minimum of 65% from Standard 10 on the Central Board or the CICSE Board, otherwise student require 60% from Standard 12

Faculty of Business, Law and Social Sciences (BLSS):

Requires the 12th Standard average of 60% with a minimum of 60% in Maths. We also accept Maths at Standard 10 with 65% from Central Board and CICSE Board.

Faculty of Computing, Engineering and the Built Environment (CEBE):

Mathematics is required at the 10th Standard minimum of 65% from Central Board and CICSE Board.
BEng Telecommunication and Networks, Mathematics is required at 12th Standard minimum 65%
All engineering courses require the 12th Standard minimum of 65% with 65% in Maths, Physics and Chemistry
