Master of Pre-Doctoral Business Studies

The Master of Pre-Doctoral Business Studies is a pathway for students wanting to undertake a PhD in the UNSW Business School. Comprising the first component of the School's doctoral program, it is designed to allow Business School doctoral students to take up to two successive years of advanced coursework during their doctoral studies. Students should be able to demonstrate a superior command of knowledge in the relevant business field and be proficient at analysing and evaluating evidence. This degree constitutes one year of advanced coursework including a research project.

PSW Opportunity

Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

The minimum requirements for admission are:

  1. The equivalent of a three-year undergraduate degree plus a postgraduate degree in a relevant discipline from UNSW with an overall average grade of at least 75 (Distinction), OR the equivalent of multiple undergraduate degrees (eg a dual degree) from UNSW with at least one in a relevant discipline and an overall average grade of at least 75 (Distinction), OR the equivalent of a four-year degree of Bachelor with first or upper second class Honours from UNSW in a relevant discipline.
  2. For international students, a high degree of English language proficiency (IELTS 7.0 overall with at least 6.5 in each band).
  3. For applicants of the Economics stream, results for the GRE unless waived by the Stream Convenor.
  4. For applicants of the Marketing stream, results for the GMAT unless waived by the Stream Convenor.
  5. A 300 word statement of research interests.
  6. The contact details of three potential referees.

Admission will ultimately be at the discretion of the UNSW Business School and will rely on the Business School having appropriate research supervision capacity and resources available for an applicant's research interests.
