Master of Actuarial Studies

The Master of Actuarial Studies suits those who have a strong background in actuarial studies, economics, mathematics or statistics. In this degree, you’ll develop the technical expertise needed to pursue the role of an actuarial analyst, as well as other roles in the broader financial services industry. You can also strengthen your actuarial training by including relevant postgraduate electives from the Business School in other disciplines such as data analytics, accounting or finance.Applicants are expected to have a mathematical background equivalent to a full year of calculus and linear algebra at first-year university undergraduate level, with a grade above credit.

PSW Opportunity

Post Study Work Steam Renames to Post Higher Education Work Steam.

  • Bachelor degree holders including honours can get upto 2 years of post study stay
  • Master by course work and extended (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 2 years
  • Masters by research (with a duration exceeding 2 years) and PhD holder can stay upto 3 years
  • The Maximum eligible age to apply for PSW will be reduced to 35 years of age from 50 years of age for all applicants

Due to the Australian Indian Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement signed by the 2 countries, according to which:

  • Indian students completing bachelor degree including honours can stay upto 2 years
  • Bachelor degree with First class honours in STEM including ICT can stay upto 3 years
  • Masters by coursework in extended researched (with a duration exceeding 2 years) can stay upto 3 years
  • PhD students can stay upto 4 years

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the program, you must have:

  • A recognized bachelor degree (or equivalent qualification) with a credit average as determined by the UNSW Postgraduate Coursework Entry Calculator; and
  • A major (at least seven courses) in actuarial studies; or*A major (at least seven courses) in econometrics; or
  • A major (at least seven courses) in mathematics or statisticsRecognition of prior learning or professional recognition to 4 courses credits (24 UOC) may be granted (towards the 4 core courses) based on your previous studies in actuarial studies (bachelor or higher). Additional course credits (up to 2 courses) may be awarded based on an incomplete postgraduate degree and/or professional examinations for the Fellowship of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, the Institute of Actuaries (UK) or the Society of Actuaries.
