Juris Doctor

The Juris Doctor is a professional, postgraduate level law degree for graduates of disciplines other than law, or with a law degree from an overseas institution. It is your pathway to admission to legal practice, as well as a wide range of careers in government, legal and social policy, international relations and business. In this three-year full-time degree you will study 16 compulsory law courses, seven elective law courses and one prescribed elective, which cover the areas of study prescribed by the Legal Profession Admission Board.

Your study will take place in student-focused seminars, facilitating debate and discussion that is pivotal to any legal vocation, and may include internships, clinics or other experiential learning. Upon your completion of this degree you will have a sound knowledge base in the discipline of Law, enabling you to proceed to the practice of law or professional work in many areas

Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria

The minimum requirement for admission to a PhD is:

  • an appropriate UNSW Bachelor degree with upper second class Honours; or
  • a completed Masters by Research from UNSW with a substantial research component and demonstrated capacity for timely completion of a high-quality research thesis; or
  • an equivalent qualification from a tertiary institution as determined by the Faculty Higher Degree Committee (HDC)

The minimum requirement for UNSW Scholarship with admission to a PhD is:

  • a four year Bachelor's degree with Honours Class I from an Australian institution or equivalent research qualification experience. This qualification must be in a field relevant to the proposed area of research.
