BSc Sociology with Data Science (including Placement Year)
How can data science methods help answer social science questions? How can we combine a deep understanding of the social world, with the latest tools and data sources to analyse it? With research methods rapidly changing in response to the large-scale generation of data within society, sociology needs to ensure it is engaged with new digital methods to both benefit from them, and to shape them. Sociologists with programming skills are highly valued in any organisation that must gather and draw inferences from data. By combining a sociological understanding with practical programming skills you learn how to understand and be that change in society.
Our BSc Sociology with Data Science is taught by our Department of Sociology and Criminology in partnership with our School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering to provide an interdisciplinary course. We are 2nd in UK for research power in sociology (Times Higher Education research power measure, Research Excellence Framework 2021) and 9th in the UK for research impact in computer science (Grade Point Average, REF 2021).
We offer expertise in many areas that complement the study of society and technology, including criminology, social history, visual sociology, economic sociology, US and European studies and cultural rights.

PSW Opportunity
- 2 Years PSW is applicable after completing a minimum duration of 9 months course (like- Undergraduate, Postgraduate Level)
- 3 Years PSW is applicable after completing PhD level courses.
Admission Requirement / Eligibility Criteria
FOR INDIA
- Most of our Undergraduate Bachelor degree courses will consider an average of 60% from the best four subjects from Indian high school qualifications. If you achieve 70% in English from CBSE or CISCE exam board qualification, you will not normally require a separate English language test score.
FOR BANGLADESH
- Previous university/college study is required in addition to local high school qualifications for our Undergraduate Bachelor degree courses. We accept a number of international qualifications, including the International Baccalaureate with the majority of our courses requiring grade 30 or above, or the SATR with the majority of our courses requiring a minimum of 1100 out of 1600 with 550 in each test.
FOR NEPAL
- Previous university/college study is required in addition to local high school qualifications for our Undergraduate Bachelor degree courses. We accept a number of international qualifications, including the International Baccalaureate with the majority of our courses requiring a grade 30 or above or the SATR with the majority of our courses requiring a minimum of 1100 out of 1600 with 550 in each test.
